History of Crater Lake

Crater Lake was formed approximately 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama erupted and collapsed, creating a caldera that filled with rainwater and snowmelt. The Klamath Tribes have long revered the lake as a sacred site, with oral traditions recounting the eruption. Discovered by European Americans in 1853, it became a national park in 1902, the fifth in the U.S. The lake’s pristine condition is preserved through strict conservation efforts.

Today, Crater Lake is a global attraction, celebrated for its natural beauty and geological significance.
