History of New York City

Originally inhabited by the Lenape people, New York City was colonized by the Dutch in the early 17th century as New Amsterdam. In 1664, the British seized control and renamed it New York. The city grew as a major port and trade center, playing a pivotal role during the American Revolution.

In the 19th century, waves of immigrants transformed NYC into a cultural and economic powerhouse. The construction of landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty symbolized its growth. The 20th century saw NYC become a global financial center, with the rise of Wall Street and the establishment of cultural institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
