History of Zion National Park

Zion’s dramatic landscapes were shaped over millions of years by erosion and geologic uplift. The area was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Ancestral Puebloans and Southern Paiute, for thousands of years. Mormon pioneers arrived in the 1850s, naming the area “Zion” for its spiritual significance. The park was established to protect its unique geology and biodiversity, becoming Utah’s first national park.

Today, Zion is a global destination, celebrated for its conservation efforts and unparalleled natural beauty.
