History of San Francisco

Originally home to the Ohlone people, San Francisco was founded by Spanish settlers in 1776 as Mission San Francisco de Asís. The city grew rapidly during the 1849 Gold Rush, becoming a major port and economic center. The 1906 earthquake and fire devastated the city, but it was quickly rebuilt, showcasing its resilience.

In the 20th century, San Francisco became a hub for counterculture, with the Beat Generation and the 1960s hippie movement. Today, it is a global leader in technology, home to Silicon Valley giants, and a beacon of cultural diversity and innovation.
