About the Amazon

The Amazon Rainforest has existed for at least 55 million years, surviving ice ages and geological changes. Indigenous peoples have inhabited the region for at least 11,000 years, developing complex societies in harmony with the forest. European exploration began in the 16th century, but the dense jungle resisted large-scale settlement. Today, the Brazilian Amazon faces challenges from deforestation, but also hosts groundbreaking scientific research and eco-tourism initiatives that demonstrate the forest's value when preserved. The region remains one of Earth's last great wilderness areas.
