History of Lima

Founded as the "City of Kings" in 1535, Lima quickly became the political, administrative, religious and economic center of Spanish South America. The city's historic center preserves magnificent colonial architecture, including the Cathedral of Lima and the Monastery of San Francisco. After independence in 1821, Lima became the capital of Peru. Today, the city blends its colonial past with modern skyscrapers, and its pre-Columbian heritage with contemporary culture.
