History of Lima

Founded as the "City of Kings" in 1535, Lima quickly became the political, administrative, religious and economic center of Spanish South America. After independence in 1821, Lima became the capital of Peru. Today, the city blends its colonial past with modern skyscrapers, and its pre-Columbian heritage with contemporary culture.
