History of Santiago

Founded in 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago was established as the capital of the Captaincy General of Chile. The city grew slowly due to resistance from indigenous Mapuche people and frequent earthquakes. In the 19th century, after independence, Santiago became the political and economic center of Chile, with European immigrants shaping its architecture and culture. The 20th century saw rapid modernization and expansion, though the 1973 coup and subsequent dictatorship left lasting marks. Today, Santiago is a thriving metropolis that preserves its historic core while embracing contemporary design and innovation.
