History of Cartagena

Founded in 1533 by Spanish commander Pedro de Heredia, Cartagena quickly became a major port for Spanish treasure fleets. Its strategic location made it a target for pirates and rival European powers, leading to the construction of massive fortifications like Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. The city played a crucial role in Spain's colonial empire and was a center of the Inquisition. Cartagena was also a major slave port, and its African influences remain evident in the local culture.

In 1811, Cartagena declared independence from Spain, becoming the first city in Colombia to do so. Today, it's a vibrant mix of history, culture, and tropical beauty.
