History of Bogotá

Founded in 1538 by Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, Bogotá became the capital of the New Kingdom of Granada. The city grew as an administrative and religious center, developing rich cultural traditions. After independence in 1819, Bogotá became the capital of Gran Colombia and later the Republic of Colombia. The 20th century brought modernization and rapid growth, though periods of violence impacted development.
